Dear Parents and Carers
Last week saw another extremely enjoyable and busy time in school. Our Year 2 children are completing their National SATs test in English and mathematics. We have been able to use our family room to support the children and give them plenty of space whilst they undertake these tasks. Many of the children have commented that they have enjoyed showing what they can do and I would like to thank all the teachers and support staff for their continued hard work and dedication in supporting your children. This year we have benefited from Mr Salter who is a postgraduate student. He has worked extremely hard and I know that the teachers have found this extra support particularly useful.
On Monday the heavens opened, and our Year 1 Trip to Formby Pinewoods had to be postponed until Tuesday. What a fantastic morning we all had. I thought we were just going to try to see some red squirrels, but no. Mrs Bromilow had planned a fantastic range of activities to help to support our Year 1 children in their writing of the story of Red Riding Hood. I stayed throughout the morning and worked with a group of children as we went through the Pinewoods, writing down sounds, smells and other aspects of language which we would use to develop our writing when we returned to class. This really was children learning through a well-planned fun activity and they all took so much from this, I am looking forward to seeing some of their writing as it develops.
On Tuesday after school, our boys played a very competitive football match against Green Park and although we lost the game after conceding a couple of early goals, the 3:1 scoreline did not reflect just how well the boys played throughout the second half. Mr Parry was delighted with their effort and their behaviour and respect towards him as the referee and I would like to thank you for the way that you conducted yourself as this is sadly an area that continues to concern me.
Our Year 6 children are enjoying learning their lines and acting out their Summer Production for their parents. We have also welcomed several transition meetings from St Bede’s and Maricourt High School to support the children as they prepare for secondary school.
On Thursday we welcomed the M&M Theatre Company who put on a fantastic production of The Hobbit. The children thoroughly enjoyed this and it was good to see them all together in the school hall. There are still some outstanding payments and I ask that you complete your payment via Iris Parentmail.
On Friday our Year 5 and 6 Cricket Teams enjoyed a fantastic afternoon at the Northern Cricket Club, Crosby. Mr Mainwaring and I supported the children and once again they were a credit to our school. It was amazing to see the children and in particular our girls develop their bowling and batting skills throughout the afternoon and I hope that many of them will come to our early morning cricket sessions when we return on Tuesday 7th June.
Yesterday, our Year 4 Kick Rounders team went to Maricourt High School and again their effort and behaviour was exemplary, although the children were a little disappointed that they did not win, I explained that losing a game by two or three points was a fantastic achievement and they should be very proud of themselves. It was great to have a chat with their parents when they returned to school to let them know just how well they had done.
I have attached a list of dates that you may find helpful when planning the final half term and I am delighted that we are now able to enjoy more social activities than we have throughout the past two years. Our girls and boys will play their final games of football this week and I have been pleased that we have taken part in as much as we can and I would like to thank Mr Parry for helping to prepare the children.
Can I remind you that the boys and girls football clubs will not take place this week and we ask that children and staff will dress in Red, White and Blue if possible for our celebratory afternoon on Friday 27th May. I have asked the teachers to share pictures on their Twitter Pages as this is certainly something to celebrate together.
Once again, I have many items of school clothing that do not have a child’s name in and I am therefore finding it impossible to return them to their rightful owners. Can I remind you that school will be closed for children on Monday 6th June as the teachers will be preparing and planning for the final half term.
Mrs Greenwood has asked can all payments for Breakfast Club, Lunch Money and After Clubs be paid as soon as possible to reconcile the accounts. Thank you.
Yours sincerely
Mr D MacAreavy – Headteacher
